Shibori Bound
Wearable Art
On Display February 7th - March 3rd
Shibori, which comes from the verb root shiboru “to wring, squeeze, press,” is a Japanese word for textiles in which a variety of resist techniques are used prior to dying in order to form intricate patterns on the cloth. Although Shibori is a Japanese word, its family of techniques includes numerous resist processes practiced throughout the world.
|
|
|
This process in not synonymous with “tie-dye” techniques, which were developed in the United States. Unlike the batik process, which utilizes wax, shibori uses physical resist techniques that bind the cloth in various ways so that the dye is channeled within and around the three-dimensional form it has been manipulated into. This can be accomplished my means of folding, stitching, crumpling, wrapping, knotting, or twisting the fabric. Sometimes combinations of these techniques are utilized to achieve unique and beautiful results and to explore design options previously unknown.
Shibori Bound was founded by Jeanne Lally and her Mother, Barbara, a two-woman artist team, about 10 years ago. Each of them carries unique artistic experiences, which have helped influence, their use of design and color in producing their current shibori creations. “The serendipity of the countless combinations of different dyes, fabrics, and resist techniques utilized in shibori makes for never ending possibilities that fascinate us. This has led to natural and unexpected “mutations” in our work, a constant sort of evolution that keeps our designs fresh and interesting, both to ourselves and to our clientele,” Jeanne states.

| "Messengers" By Todd Sinclair |
January 10th - February 6th 2012
“Painting
is an expendable commodity that we desperately need. For me it is
like breathing,
It
is essential to my existence. When I paint I tap into an energy
source which informs the act of painting. I try to channel both the
universal and highly personal in my artwork. The use of expression in
a painting is representative of human spirit. Expression incorporates
intuition and emotion, which are the science of the expanding
universe. I believe these paintings are messages and I hope to
be a messenger. The angel represents our spirit, the boat our
vulnerable side. The hand is reaching for something, a question, a
need or a quest, and the angel represents the message. I believe
painting is a form of communication with the human spirit, a
materialization of or a peek into the soul”. Todd Sinclair
Todd is a Public School Art Teacher in Springfield MA. He lives in Granby MA, with his wife Jennifer and their two children. We are thrilled to have him as our January Artist.

"The Say Animals Don't Worry" On Display Nov 6th - Dec 3rd
Arts Night Out Reception November 11th 5-8PM
“They say animals don’t worry,
you know animals are hairy, they have untroubled lives, they think
everything is nice, they like to laugh at people, they’re setting a
bad example” David Byrne “Animals”
"I think we all, at one time or another,
have wondered what animals are thinking, but the real question is
what thoughts do we project onto them. This body of work speaks
through insinuation. All the animals seem to have expressions of
disinterest or aloofness to pave the way for our own judgment. I
don’t know whether animals have thoughts either way on the
absurdity or necessity of war, but it is extremely easy to project
our own fears, anxieties, or fascination onto them." Mark Bouthilette

"A fascination with architectural detail, glowing late afternoon light as it rakes across the landscape and stormy skies, inspires me to catch that moment on canvas. Working in my studio from photographs, sketches and imagination, I paint thin layers of oil glazes until the luminosity, balance and harmony of colors are attained, adding the final realistic details last."

Matriculation New Works By Heather Sky Fulton

| Heather by Paul Specht |
|
We are thrilled to have Heather Sky Fulton's work here for the Month of August!
"MATRICULATION:" “Becoming eligible to enter by acquiring the prerequisites” This series of collages celebrates the process and variety of human growth by challenging the idea that externally imposed standards of learning always correlate with natural development. These paintings seek to dissolve the notion that prerequisites must define when we are allowed to move to the next level: to Matriculate. An individual’s growth rate is unique and integral to the formation of their character – no government standard will accurately measure it. Art won’t either, but where standards stagnate, art liberates. In each work, the theme of growth appears through subjects including pre-school experience, developmental milestones, tectonic plate shift, height, caution, and recent history. The works also honor individual talents (sword-swallowing, plumbing, Mysticism & card-counting), which develop independently while transcending collegiate yardsticks. Growth cannot be measured sitting down. “Most of the evils of the world arise from man’s being unable to sit still in a room” – Blaise Pascal

"I call this series of work "Atmospheric Proportions".
In every painting there is an expression of feeling. A meditative presence. I do not work from photographs directly, rather, I use them to remember feelings. I work in many layers. I will come back to a painting many times and add layers of paint until I can feel the emotional quality visually. My work and my vision is to project a sense of stillness in my painting. I feel this may also be a universal longing"……Kate Childs

Marlene Rye Oil Paintings and Pastels
May7th - June 3rd Reception Friday May 13th 5-8 PM
|
Marlene Rye invites you to take a fresh look at nature through her paintings and drawings at the Trailside Gallery at Pedal Properties in May!
Return to a time when nature was more than a backdrop that you walked through or drove by, a time in your childhood where all the fairy tales had not been outgrown or explained away. Imagination ran free, unacquainted with the adult world of ‘facts’. Here was a world not yet fully defined, not yet labeled and categorized. Remember finding that magical tree where anything and everything was possible, that secret space where trees became circus performers, magicians, dancers, and all things fantastical. It was a world so charged, so brimming with possibility that you could close your eyes and see the space through your whole body, with all your senses.
